Republic Act 9500 recognizes the importance of instilling “new ways of thinking” on students, which they will use to meet the challenges of the 21st Century, the President said.

A Statement of the University Council of the University of the Philippines Diliman

Gloria Macapagal Arroyo has no basis to continue in office.

On 13 July 2005, at the height of the Garci Scandal, the University Council (UC) of the University of the Philippines Diliman—called on President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to resign immediately. She did not resign.

The UC observed that all her acts are “a direct assault on nearly all the values we hold sacred in the academe.”

As part of UP’s 100th year celebration, we are putting together ‘100 Kwentong Peyups’, a series of columns which will appear in PDI and Philippine Star throughout the year. We invite all past students of any of the University of the
Philippines ‘ units to submit their stories. Submissions should:

1. Be a maximum of 1,000 words
2. Be a personal experience and written in the 1st person
3. Emotionally engaging—funny, sad, scary, etc.
4. Make the connection between the story and a life lesson that serves you well today

FOR TWO YEARS in a row, a graduate student of the program, Diploma in Research and Development Management (DRDM) tops the graduating class, while graduate students of the program, Master in Development Communication continue to dominate the honors list.

Susan Eleanor Claro of DRDM is the valedictorian for the UPOU’s graduating class of 2007. She works as a technical and management adviser and country representative for Health Unlimited (HU), a UK-based NGO in Laos. Her work involves managing and developing the HU Laos country programme and liaising with government authorities, counterparts, and development aid donors.

Last year’s valedictorian, Niño Ismael Sanchez Pastor of the Department of Health (DoH), was also from DRDM. (more…)

Introduction
I’d like to share my own take on development communication, if I may, not in a manner usually prescribed by experts and academics but as I have experienced it.  I’m woefully aware that this is not the best way to explain development communication, and it’s entirely possible that my own experiences might actually be a wrong operationalization of development communication.   However, this is how I have practiced it in four decades of my professional life.  (more…)

During the past decades open and distance education has always been considered and described as (permit me to use the words of Cherie Gil in the 1985 movie Bituing Walang Ningning) “nothing but a second rate, trying hard, copycat” in comparison to the traditional brick and mortar schools.  But with the onslaught of new technologies at its disposal, open and distance learning has come of age and could now compete with the quality of traditional classroom education…    (more…)
